Photograph Source & Quality

Q: What is the source of the images in The SPORT Collection?

A: The majority of the photographs come from SPORT Magazine, North America’s first great sports magazine, which launched in 1946 and ceased publication in 2000. Other images come from private collections.

Q: Are these images truly rare and unique, or is that a marketing pitch?

A: From its inception eight years before the birth of Sports Illustrated, SPORT Magazine pioneered the use of color sports photography, and its archive of approximately 250,000 images is particularly strong from 1946 to 1970. Its photographers had direct access to the superstars of that era and, in many cases, produced stunning color photographs the likes of which do not exist anywhere else. In a 1999 appraisal of the archive done by a leading North American fine art photography appraiser, the SPORT magazine archive was described as “among the most significant resources for 20th century photographic images of American sports figures in the world.”

Q: What is a giclée fine-art print?

A: Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) refers to a process to create fine art prints from a digital source using fade-resistant archival inks. A significant advantage to giclée printing is that it allows the artist or printer full control of the printing process, resulting in hand-printed, fine-art prints of museum quality that are intended to last a lifetime. Adhering to such exacting standards means giclée prints of far superior quality to much of the product readily available on the Internet that is mass produced from standard offset or desktop printers.

Q: How can I tell the quality?

A: It is indeed difficult to convey the quality of our product online. We’ve created a page — The SPORT Gallery Quality — to show some of the steps taken to ensure a treasured, valuable collectible is created.

Q: Do you only produce fine-art giclée prints?

A: Yes, we only manufacture hand-printed, fine-art giclée prints. We deliberately elected to create only premium products befitting of such a high-quality magazine as SPORT.

Q: If my favourite team or player is not currently available in your series of limited-edition prints, do you do custom orders?

A: Yes, we will consider custom orders. In those cases there is a small research fee that is payable up front but is deducted from the price of an eventual purchase. Contact us to inquire about a custom order.

Q: I’m looking for a sport photograph to cover my entire wall – how large can you print the photographs and how much will this cost?

A: If you’re looking to do a custom order larger than what you see available on our site – this is certainly possible, but only for certain photographs. Contact us and tell us the size of wall you are looking to fill, the sport, team, or player you are looking for – we will get back to you with possible photographs for you to choose from as well as pricing. Please note that pricing is based on sizes, which means that the larger you want to go the more it will cost. If you’re looking to fill a large wall consider doing multiple pieces – for instance a series of 3 or more canvases featuring the same player, or from the same game will work as one large cohesive piece at a lesser price (and will be easier to transport).

Q: In addition to the images currently available on the website, can other images be viewed online?

A: We are in the process of digitizing much of the archive and the inventory of limited edition prints and open edition prints will continue to grow over time. New prints will be added on a bi-weekly basis.

Q: All the images pictured on the website have a white overlay that says “The Sport Gallery.” What is that and will it be visible on the image if I order a Limited Edition Print?

A: The SPORT logo you are referring to is called a watermark. It is placed on every image to deter people from making copies of our images. But the watermark is removed when we create a Limited Edition Print. So the print that you receive will not include the watermark.

Q: What is the difference between a Limited Edition Print and an Open Edition Print?

A: The major difference between a Limited and Open Edition Print is that Limited Edition means that there are only a limited number that can be printed. For instance, if the number in the edition is 100, after we print 100 of these prints, no more will be printed. Therefore Limited Edition Prints are expected to increase in price over time, because of their exclusivity, and that is one of the reasons that they are generally more expensive than the open edition prints, which have no predetermined number that can or will be printed.

Another difference between our collection of limited and open edition prints is that our limited edition prints were hand selected out of the entire SPORT Collection archive specifically for being unique and rare, and therefore are the most valuable in our collection.

Also, in terms of the actual physical difference between the two is that Limited Edition Prints come with a number, title, and emboss on the border of the print, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity, whereas our Open Edition Prints do not. Despite these differences, both our Limited and Open Edition Prints are the same in terms of their quality, as they all meet or exceed archival and museum quality standards.
