About Giclee Fine Art Reproduction

Although giclee prints are the fastest-growing segment of the fine art market, there remains some confusion and uncertainty about the term. The giclee fine art reproduction process originated in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when giclee was synonymous with the term "Iris print", which referred to a print made on a particular proofer, the Iris Model Four, made by an Israeli-based company, Scitex. Perhaps the best brief definition for the giclee print is the one to be found in the online dictionary Wikipedia.

About Vintage Photographs

While there is some variation in thinking as to the precise timeline involved, the generally-accepted principal is that to qualify as a vintage photograph, a particular print must have been made, from the original negative, within a short period of time of the negative having been shot.

At its strictest interpretation, the period of time is one year. However, a more widely accepted version is in the range of two years. The latter time frame is supported in a book, A Portrait of Baseball Photography, published last year by MastroNet, Inc., purveyors of the online auction house. The authors, most notably well-known collector Marshall Fogel, propose four basic grouping for photographs and define the vintage (or Type I in their system) photograph as follows: "A first-generation photograph, developed from the original negative during the period (approximately two years) when the picture was taken."
