The Detroit Red Wings are one of the NHL’s oldest franchises, and also one of the members of the “Original Six” era of NHL teams that played from 1942-1967. The Red Wings were founded in 1926, at the time known as the Detroit Cougars until 1930, where their name was changed briefly to the Falcons for two seasons before finally settling on the Red Wings in 1932. The Red Wings are not only one of the NHL’s most successful franchises – they are the most successful United States-based NHL franchise in history, having won 11 Stanley Cups, which is third overall behind the Montreal Canadiens (24) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (13). Nicknamed “Hockeytown”, Detroit has been one of the most popular hockey teams in North America, as well as having one of the most loyal fanbases. The Red Wings have set a North American professional sports record for most consecutive seasons with a playoff birth, a streak which ended in 2016/2017 at 25 consecutive seasons. Many NHL legends and greats have also played in Motor City, including one of the most influential, popular and successful players to ever step onto the ice – Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe.
